Migration Trail from Virginia, thru Tennessee, Georgia and Alabama
Research Notes of Gwen Russell Burgess November 3, 2015
I began researching the Burgess ancestors for my 3 sons, Donald Eugene Burgess, Jr, Stephen Craig Burgess and William Brian Burgess in 2000.
My sons believed their line was from Wales/Cornwall and that the original ancestor came to America around 1600. We started the research knowing that in 1805 in Cherokee, Alabama, they were using the surname Burgess.
But when they received their 67 DNA markers, they discovered Burgess was not their ancestral line. All their dna markers exactly match a Burke line and slightly match a Flynn line from Ireland, probably Cork. Several of their Y matches have contacted me and indicate that the surname Burgess is probably a derivative of Burke. The dna markers seem to indicate that their line includes a James Burke born 1710 and both their Y and Family Finder matches include a line from Laughlin, Daniel, Patrick and William Flynn of Ireland.
Would love to hear from anyone viewing this site that might have information regarding this Burgess line who was probably originally a Burke that involved a Flynn and a Davis.
